Zapienkanka is an absolutely delicious Polish street food. It’s something I’ll ask all of my friends to make because its wonderfully delicious, the crispy sides with the rich juicy mushroom. yumma mia! My husband just couldn’t stop praising, the tasty zapiekanka.

you can make this for dinner or for lunch. furthermore, Its super easy to make and you can get it onto the dinning table within 10 -15 minutes.

All you need is a baguette ( also called Samoli bread in middle eastern countries), mushrooms, Gouda cheesee or Edam cheese, butter, Onion, garlic and ketchup.

Ingredients required for zapiekanka recipe

Finely Chop the onions, mushrooms, garlic and parsley. If you want to try this recipe and don’t have baguettes, you could try this with a bun as well, should work fine for this recipe.

Cut the baguette in half, and make a small grove by scrapping the bun with a spoon. I’ll be giving the scraped bread to the pigeons that keep waiting near the kitchen window while I cook. Its good to have a company while cooking ๐Ÿ˜€

Heat a pan, add butter and add the finely chopped garlic. After about 10 seconds, add in the chopped onions. Fry on medium flame till the onion turns golden. Add the mushroom into the pan. Sprinkle some salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes.

when you add the chopped mushrooms to the butter sautรฉed onions, the aroma is just amazing, I felt like having it right from the pan.

Gouda cheese for zapiekanka recipe

Fill in the scraped baguettes with the mushroom. Load with generous amount of gouda cheese. I love gouda cheese! <3

Then, Place the baguettes on an Aluminum foil on the tray (cheese can melt on the tray and make it difficult to clean, this helps to avoid that mess). Bake Zapiekanka on middle rack for 5 minutes on a 180 degree oven. Take it out, garnish with ketchup and parsley. Serve hot! and be ready to receive compliments ๐Ÿ˜‰

It’s a semi-hard cheese made from cow’s milk. The texture slightly resembles mozzarella but is not exactly that stretchy. It has a rich buttery flavor. Gouda cheese is very similar to Edam cheese. The brand I used was Frico gouda cheese, which comes in a large round ball and also in small individual packets.

    1. Finely chop garlic and fry it in butter for 10 seconds.

    3. Cut the baguette in half, scrape the bread to make hole and fill with mushroom
    4. Grate gouda cheese and sprinkle it all over the baguettes
    5. Bake in an oven at 180 degree C for 5 minutes. Serve hot drizzled with ketchup and parsley.

Notes

Serve hot to enjoy the full taste. If It is not hot, place it back in the oven for 3-5 minutes. Do not use microwave oven, as it will make the bread soft and will loose its crunchy texture.
