Burger King Onion rings: Crispy outside, delicious inside. Onions are amongst my most favorite ingredients, no matter what I’m cooking. Today I will be sharing one of the most delectable onion dishes that I have ever known, i.e Onion rings (Burger King style).
Believe me, these onion rings are super crunchy and delicious. I love them with burgers or hot dogs or just solo. However they are, they r-o-c-k the party!!!
We do not use the actual onion slices in the Burger King onion rings recipe but we make the use of grated onions and mix them with the bread crumbs and shape them into rings.
You can enjoy them hot and fresh but also pop them in the freezer so you can have fresh onion rings, ANYTIME!!!
What’s the best onion for onion rings?
The most important part of an onion ring is the onion, obviously and it is necessary to choose the right onions for the right job. For deep-fried onion rings, I recommend using sweet large white onions. I love the white onions and they make really good onion rings.
I suggest not to use the harsh yellow onions because I prefer the sweetness and distinct taste of sweet onion to the conventional yellow and red ones.
Tip: Do not grind the onions, but grate the onions using the cheese grater. Grinding the onions to fine paste, makes it bitter.
How to make bread crumbs at home?
Bread crumbs are super easy to make at home and I must say, they taste much better than store-bought. All you need is a few bread slices. Start toasting them on the pan at low flame for 10 minutes on each side. By now, the bread should be dry and crisp. Continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes if they are not completely dry. Now, break the crispy slices and run them in the blending jar/ food processor for about a minute. Tada!!! Your bread crumbs are ready.
OR
Place the bread slices on the oven tray and put them into a preheated 300 degrees oven for about 15 minutes on each side (total 30 minutes) and run them in the blending jar/food processor for a minute. You can also freeze the bread crumbs for 6 months and use them when needed.
Burger King onion ring ingredients
- 1 large white Onion
- 1+1/2 cup Bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup + 1 Tbsp. milk
- 1/2 cup + 1 Tbsp All-purpose flour
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- salt to taste
- Oil to fry
How To Make Copycat Burger King Onion Rings
Start off by grating the white onion using the cheese grater. Place the paper towel over the grated onion to absorb excess water. Dispose of the paper towel.

Now add half the bread crumbs, 1 tbsp. all-purpose flour and 1tbsp milk to the grated onions.

Combine all the ingredients very well to form a soft dough.

Take about 1 or 1+1/2 tbsp. of dough mixture on another plate or chopping board, form into an elongated roll (as shown in picture).

Next, shape it into a ring. Place it on a plate. Repeat with the rest of the mixture. Place the plate in the freezer for at least 2 hours or until the onion ring becomes firm.

Tip: Even thickness is best when making onion rings and we do not want to make it very thick because it’s gonna take longer to cook and longer to fry. The outside coating is going to burn before the onion mixture inside has a chance to cook fully. So, make sure the rings are even and not very thick.
Now we gonna have a two-step process to coat the frozen onion rings.
- In a plate/bowl, mix garlic powder with the remaining breadcrumbs.
- In another bowl, mix together flour and enough milk to make a nice paste that is neither runny nor thick.

Take the onion rings out of the freezer. Dip the ring in the flour paste. Then dip into the breadcrumbs, coat the ring completely with the breadcrumbs (one at a time).



After coating, place the ring back in the freezer for one hour before frying
Fry them in the preheated oil for about 4-5 minutes on medium flame until crisp and golden brown. Fry 2-3 onion rings at a time. Do not overcrowd the frying pan.

Place the rings on an absorbent paper after frying and serve hot with your favorite dip.

Burger King onion ring sauce recipe
The zesty sauce of Burger King takes the flavors of the onion rings to the next level. It is absolutely easy to make and tastes awesome.
In a bowl mix, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/3 cup tomato ketchup, 1/4 cup horseradish sauce, 1/4 cup mustard sauce, 1 tbsp. sugar, 1 tsp. paprika powder, 2 tsp. lemon juice and a drop of soy sauce. Mix the ingredients using a spoon. Refrigerate the sauce and use it when needed.
Note: The sauce taste best few hours after you make it.
